Vadodara Municipal Corporation to use fiber-reinforced polymer manhole covers
Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has decided to replace 200 manhole covers made from reinforced cement concrete (RCC) with fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) material. The replacement will be done on an experimental basis across the city. The decision came after the civic body fitted FRP covers at a few locations in the city.
P M Patel, city engineer at VMC, said, "The experience with these covers was good and they lasted longer than the RCC covers. To carry the process forward we have decided to use 200 such covers on an experimental basis throughout the city." The RCC covers are prone to damage and breakage frequently.
The civic body will spend about Rs 11.7 lakh in FRP manhole covers with each cover available at a price of Rs 5,850. Patel said the FRP covers had no scrap value and are also durable. In the past, cast iron manhole covers were frequently stolen for its scrap value.
